Gateshead Fell hosted one of the Gateshead Schools tournaments on Thursday 5th July.

Sixteen teams from 10 local schools took part in the tournament.

Playing in groups of 4, the morning play consisted of 3 matches to determine the League Groups for the afternoon session. Two of the groups provided very close results with Group 2 having three teams that won and lost the same number of matches separated by only 12 runs between them. Group 3 was also close with two teams at the top of the league having won two of their matches and tied the decider between them.

All was resolved by the number of runs scored and the afternoon also provided some entertaining matches.

The overall winners and tournament champions were the team from Birtley St. Josephs who won four and tied their other game.

Final league tables were as follows:-

Season Opener at the Fell

The junior season got under way with the Fell Under 13's playing at home to Felling.

Felling batting first scored 72 for the loss of three wickets. Fell wickets were taken by Drew White, Alit Prasad and Stephen Peacock.

In reply, the Fell batting was steady, with runs being scored slowly, but wickets were not being lost. The Fell were in a position to win the game until the 14th over when they lost the first wicket - unfortunately after that further wickets were lost in the last pair and the Fell ended up with a total of 63 runs for 4 wickets.

David Daley top scored for the Fell with 14 not out and Sam Roseby made 10 not out.

A good performance by both teams with Felling deserving their win.

Fell work hard for first win

The Under 13's played at Durham City in their most recent match. The game proved to be a real contrast of styles.

The Fell batted first and although only scoring 65 runs in their overs, they only lost 2 wickets - both poor ones, a missed slog and an unnecessary run out. They were heavily indebted to Sam Roseby who scored 28 of the runs including two 6's

In contrast Durham City scored more quickly, but lost wickets regularly. They ended up with a total of 91 runs but for the loss of 7 wickets. Best bowling for the Fell was from Michael Elliott 2 for 7, David Daley 2 for 6 and Ajit Prasad 2 for 7. Elliott bowled well at the end of the game when both sides were in with a chance of the win and took the wicket in the last over that effectively made it hard for Durham to win.

This was an exciting game for the players and all the parents from both sides who had turned out to watch the game. Well played both teams.

Promising start to season continues

The Under 13's continued their good start to the season with a fine win at home to Boldon.

Boldon batted first and had obvious strength in their pairings. But the Fell bowlers, in the main, maintained a good line and length and managed to take regular wickets. Fielding was good with an excellent catch from Matty Ridley and another solid performance behind the stumps from Sam Roseby.

Boldon scored healthy 104 runs but lost 8 wickets in the process. Best bowling came from David Daley with 3 wickets for 12 runs and Chris Dodds with 1 wicket for only 2 runs.

The Fell batting response was disciplined with batters being careful not to give their wicket away easily. It looked like being a very close finish - especially when Sam Roseby in the last pairing was dismissed before he scored - but he responded well smashing 24 runs to give the Fell the win.

Both teams played well in difficult and wet conditions.

U 13's learn a painful lesson

The Under 13's travelled to Chester for their latest match. Without captain David Daley, the Fell elected to bowl first. Chester's batting was strong but the Fell bowlers tried hard and managed to take 6 wickets. Unfortunately, the last Chester pair of batters smashed the ball to the boundary regularly. Their top player scored 50 and they ended up with an excellent total of 134 for 6.

Chester also had 3 tall fast bowlers and they caused problems for all the Fell batters.

There were some near misses and hits that will have caused bruises to the Fell boys. However they all did their best and stuck at the task ending up scoring 60 for 6 wickets.

A convincing win for Chester.

Under 13's come out on top in an exciting finish

The Fell Under 13's played at home to Eppleton in their most recent match.

On a lovely morning, the Fell batted first and although the batting was steady, they managed to lose wickets regularly against the Eppleton bowling. David Daley and Stuart Gray top scored for the Fell with 13 runs and no dismissals.

The Fell were helped by the Eppleton bowling being wayward. They bowled 21 wides and there were 18 byes that all helped the Fell to 106 for 7 wickets.

The second half of the game was exciting as Eppleton scored runs at the required rate and the Fell took wickets quite regularly. The Fell fielding and catching was good and Eppleton went into the last over of the game still with a chance to win. Michael Elliott, bowling under pressure, bowled straight and only 2 runs came from it.

Eppleton scored 93 for 6 wickets, giving the Fell victory by a 5 run margin when dismissals were added.

Sam smashes Burnmoor as Under 13's impress

The Fell Under 13's hosted Burnmoor in their most recent game.

Burnmoor batted first and in their 20 overs scored 66 for 4 wickets. All the Fell bowlers bowled well, but Drew White with 2 overs 1 wicket for only 1 run had the most impressive figures. The fielding of the team was also good and it can be seen practice and training is starting to have an effect.

A sound batting performance was what was required to win the game and that is exactly what the crowd got from the Fell boys. The Fell lost their first wicket in the 4th, with all the previous batters scoring a few runs, but most importantly, not getting out.

The Fell were in a strong position going into the last pair, with only 1 wicket lost, but Sam Roseby put the game beyond any doubt smashing the bowling all round the ground for a fine 33 runs including a six and six 4's.

Fell take wickets galore

The Fell Under 13's travelled to Horden for their most recent match.

Winning the toss the Fell batted first and initially struggled against the Horden bowling. The Fell total of 85 for 6 wickets was heavily indebted to the final batting pair of Sam Roseby and Jack Doherty. Although each was out once they scored heavily with Roseby hitting four 6's onto the Pavilion roof in his 31 and Doherty scoring 15. This total gave the Fell bowlers a chance.

This was a chance they took well...

Wickets fell regularly and when the final Horden pair came to the crease, they needed 16 to win provided they lost no further wickets. But, some fine Fell bowling, helped by some fine catching and some comedy running between the wickets, meant that an incredible 7 further wickets fell giving the Fell an easy win at the end.

Top bowler was David Daley with 6 wickets for only 13 runs. There were also great catches by Matty Fenton and David Daley and in general a good standard of fielding.

Under 13's lose out in a nail biter

It all came down to the last ball of the game in the Under 13's most recent game against Sunderland. With one ball to go, Sunderland needed 1 run to win the game - the ball was lifted over the Fell infielders and the batters ran the two to the delight of their jubilant team-mates.

It was a close game between two evenly-matched sides. The Fell batting first scored 74 for the loss of 4 wickets. Top batter was Stuart Gray with 17 not out.

The Fell bowling was excellent and this was assisted by some excellent ground fielding. But, the Sunderland batters stuck to there task and did not give wickets away easily. Only 3 wickets were taken by the Fell bowlers.

At the start of the last over Sunderland needed 6 runs. Michael Elliott bowling accurately, had no runs from balls 1 and 2. Ball 3 went off a thick edge to the boundary for 4, ball 4 went for a single bringing the weaker of the Sunderland pair to face. Ball 5 was no run, and the final ball was sliced over extra cover for the runs required.

An excellent game, played in a good spirit by both teams.

The Fell Struggle at The Harbour

The Fell under 13's were beaten in their most recent match at Seaham Harbour.

Seaham batted first and looked a strong team as the Fell bowlers struggled to make a breakthrough. It was the 9th over of the game before Chris Dodds took the first Seaham wicket. Three further wickets were taken as Seaham made a respectable 94 for 4 wickets.

The Fell batting was soon in trouble and two early wickets were lost - one to a run out after some poor judgement of the run. Skipper David Daley restored some order scoring 20 not out, but the Fell were always behind the requred rate to challenge the Seaham total.

Top player for the Fell was Jack Doherty who bowled well, taking one of the wickets to fall, was resonsible for a run out with some excellent fielding, took a good catch, and scored 9 not out when he batted.

The Fell ended up scoring 73 for 5 wickets, including an LBW. Not seen very often in Under 13 cricket!

The Fell enjoy a day at the Seaside

The Fell Under 13's enjoyed their morning at Marsden in their most recent match. The weather was sunny and only the strong breeze spoiled the weather for the Fell parents and supporters who had travelled to watch the match.

The Fell batted first and the pitch was slow and not easy to score runs on. But, the Fell batting was responsible and only 3 wickets were lost in the 20 overs. The Fell scored a total of 63 runs. Top scorer was Matty Fenton with 15 not out. An important score that boosted the Fell total at the right point in the game.

With such a small score to defend the Fell bowlers knew they had to be accurate and not give easy runs away. Marsden started off well with both openers scoring 10 not out and it looked like being an uphill struggle for the Fell boys.

This all changed when David Daley bowled. His two overs were both maidens and he took 2 wickets. The game changed dramatically with the Fell now taking wickets regularly. Marsden 'fell apart' and at one point Drew White was on a 'hat-trick' after taking two wickets in two balls.

The Fell fielding was  good with Jack Doherty again starring - he took 3 catches including one difficult one down by his ankles from a well hit shot.

Marsden eventually lost 14 wickets giving the Fell an easy win in the end.

Fell Under 13's beaten up by some big kids...

The Fell Under 13's travelled to picturesque Whitburn on a wet, dismal Sunday morning to play a rearranged game. The Fell team was severely weakened by players taking part in a football tournament and only 8 Fell players took the field.

But, credit to those who did play, against a side of giants. It was always going to be difficult and so it proved. The Whitburn bowlers took wickets regularly and only Chris Dodds and Michael Elliott looked as though they could cope with the bowling. Elliott scoring a creditable 14 not out.

The Fell scored 60 runs but lost 10 wickets in the process.

When the first ball of the Whitburn innings was hit almost to Sunderland, the Fell knew the second half of the match would not be any easier. Michael Elliott bowled 4 overs and was hit for 56 runs!!! Best bowling was from Chris Dodds who bowled 4 overs for only 9 runs. An excellent effort in the context of the game.

Quote of the week came from Fell player Stuart Gray, who as wickets were falling all around said "We're falling apart here". He was right, but that is what happens when you have a mismatch in physical size of players.

Not to worry, another game next week - things might change,

Match Reports:

Fine start to season for fell U 15's

The Fell Under 15's travelled to Felling for their season opener.

The Fell batted first and made steady progress. Although opener Thomas Walker was dismissed for only 1, Scott Strange and Michael Dicks batted well to maintain the runs. Dicks in particular batted fluently for a fine 22. Strange was his usual model of concentration and batted through the 20 overs scoring 41 not out. The Fell totaled 104 for 3 wickets.

Felling, with some strong batting must have thought they were in with a good chance of the game, but a fine opening spell by John Etherington put them well behind the required rate. His 5 overs contained 2 maidens, 1 wicket for only 6 runs. He was well supported by Phil Foster.

The bowling prize undoubtedly went to Scott Thompson who bowling at first change ripped through the Felling batting with 4 overs, 4 wickets for only 5 runs with his left arm swing bowling.

Felling struggled to recover and capitulated to 41 for 9 wickets in their allotted overs.

This was an excellent all round performance by the team. There was some fine fielding by Jordan Nellis with 2 run outs and a fantastic caught and bowled by Michael Lumsden.

Can the team maintain these standards?

Under 15's crash to defeat

After the promising start at Felling, the Fell under 15's were hopeful of a good performance at home to Durham City.

Batting first they struggled to come to terms with the taller, bigger Durham bowlers. Only Malik Javed showed the necessary courage and application. He top scored with 21, in a low total of 52 for 7 wickets.

The Fell bowling started off promisingly, but some big hitting from the 'giant' Dobson for Durham quickly swung the game their way. His 38 not out included 5 x 4's and a 6.

Best bowling for the Fell came from Scott Thompson with a highly creditable 1 for 9 in his 5 x overs.

Chester too strong for Fell again

The Under 15's hosted Chester le Street in their most recent match. The Fell went into the game in a positive frame of mind, having shown some reasonable early season form.

Chester's batting was strong and this showed right from the start when one of the openers hit two big fours off the bowling of John Etherington. Both openers continued in the same way and the score was 47 in only the 8th over before the first wicket fell.

Scott Thompson did his best to restrict the scoring and was the best Fell bowler. The Fell managed to slow the scoring rate down, but Chester still ended up with a total of 119 for 5 wickets at the end of their overs. mention must be made of Chester opener J. Harrison, who scored 55 excellent runs, all good shots, all into gaps in the field.

The Fell reply started off in a steady fashion, but this changed when Scott Strange ran himself out on 17. Michael Dicks made 25, but the scoring rate was very slow against some accurate Chester bowling. The Fell didn't lose wickets, but just could not score runs quickly enough. They ended up with 67 for the loss of 3 wickets.

A deserved win for Chester le Street.

Pinkney wins it in style for Gateshead

The Fell Under 15's made the trip to Eppleton for their latest match.

The Fell bowled first and had success at the start of the innings taking 2 Eppleton wickets for only 5 runs. Eppleton's talented Davies then pulled the innings round and he was well supported by Muster. Eppleton scored 84 for 4 wickets in their 20 overs. The wicket was slow and sometimes difficult to bat on, but the Fell boys should have been happy with the total.

Accurate bowling from John Etherington with 5 overs, 1 for 13 and Scott Thompson with 5 overs, 1 for 15.

The Fell innings started off positively with the scoring rate above what was required. There was then a top quality catch to get rid of Scott Strange, as Davies leapt high above his head to take a one-handed catch to a ball screaming to the long on boundary.

The scoring rate slowed after this, but with wickets in hand, the Fell must have been confident. But, as the overs progressed, the Fell became 'bogged down' and when Michael Dicks was out for a deserved 40 runs, Eppleton were in with a chance.

That was until Tom Pinkney sorted the game out in the 19th over, hitting a 6 and 4 in consecutive balls to give the Fell the edge again.

Good running in the final over saw the Fell home by 8 wickets with 3 balls of the game to go.

Dicks stars with the ball for Fell under 15's

Michael Dicks took 6 wickets for 15 runs as the fell beat Burnmoor in their latest game.

Burnmoor batting first were restricted to 62 all out thanks to Dicks' accurate spell of leg-spin bowling. With the exception of opener Lancaster none of the Burnmoor batters could cope with the line, length and spin as Dicks bowled four victims and had the other two well stumped by Pinkney.

In reply the Fell had a shock as both Scott Strange and Dicks were out with the score at only 4. But Malik Javed batted right through the rest of the innings for 19 not out and Tom Pinkney blasted some bad balls for four as he made 33 well taken runs.

The Fell lost 3 wickets in achieving the winning score for another sound victory.

Fell too strong for Philadelphia

The Fell Under 15's continued their good form with a convincing win at Philadelphia in their most recent match.

Philadelphia batted first and were bowled out by the Fell for only 63 runs in 19.2 overs. John Etherington did some early damage with 3 wickets for 11 runs and Scott Strange finished the innings off with 3 wickets for only 3 runs.

The Fell quickly knocked the required runs off in the 14th over for the loss of 2 wickets. Scott Strange top scoring with 32 not out.

Fell Openers Crush Whitburn Bowlers

The Fell opening pair of Scott Strange and Michael Dicks crushed the Whitburn bowling in the Under 15's most recent match at home to Whitburn.

Scott Strange a magnificent 92 not out and he was well supported by Michael Dicks who scored 53 not out. The Whitburn bowlers had no answer to the powerful hitting of Strange who scored 13 x 4's in his total. Michael Dicks in contrast played a good supporting role with some fine strokes through the Whitburn field. Both players were positive and ran well between the wickets to aid their scoring rate.

The Fell totalled a season high 158 without losing a wicket.

With such a high score The Fell took the opportunity to give most of the team a bowl and Whitburn scored a respectable 89 for the loss of 5 x wickets at the end of the game.

The Fell fielding was also very respectable - these boys are starting to look like a team. Let's see if they can continue to progress.

Fell Under 15's too strong for Seaham

The Fell Under 15's entertained Seaham Harbour on an evening that avoided the recent rain and bad weather.

The Fell batted first and openers Scott Strange and Michael Dicks started off very positively, putting the Seaham fielding under pressure with some excellent running between the wickets. They had scored 86 before the first wicket fell when Strange was bowled for 55.

The rate of scoring was maintained by Tom Pinkney, who in his usual positive way smashed the ball around before being bowled for 48.

The Fell scored 167 for 3 wickets.

Seaham's reply got off to a bad start when they lost a wicket to Phil Foster in the second innings of the game. The younger Seaham team always looked as though they might find scoring runs difficult, but they stuck at the task well showing good spirit and determination not to get out.

The Fell won the game easily as Seaham scored 50 runs and lost only 3 wickets.

Fell edge out Sacriston in a low scoring game

The Fell Under 15's played at home to Sacriston in the Glen Robinson Memorial Cup.

Sacriston batted first on a damp, slow pitch that made scoring difficult. They found runs hard to come by against some accurate Fell bowling - highlighted by Malik Javed who bowled 4 overs, 2 maidens, 1 wicket for only 6 runs.

Sacriston managed only 62 for 7 in their allotted overs.

The Fell also found the pitch difficult and had exactly the same problems as Sacriston. They were grateful to a knock of 27 from Michael Dicks, as wickets fell regularly at the other end.

With one over to go the scores were tied and it was not until the second last ball of the match that Mark Burton managed to hit one for 4 to seal a win for the Fell in a close and exciting finish.

Fell beat the weather to overcome Marsden

On a damp, dreary night the Fell Under 15's travelled to Marsden to play their latest game. Starting about 10 minutes late because of rain, the Fell batted first and made good progress on a wet ground.

A further delay for rain may well have ended the game, but Marsden were keen to play and the match went on.

Scott Strange batted all the way through the Fell innings for 64 not out, and he was given good support by Tom Pinkney with 15 and Malik Javed with 28. The Fell totalled 120 for the loss of 2 wickets.

Marsden's reply started slowly against the accurate Fell bowling. John Etherington was particularly accurate with 4 overs, 1 wicket for only 6 runs. Marsden's top batters did at one point look threatening, but an important wicket from Malik slowed the run rate down again.

Marsden ended up scoring 74 for the loss of 4 wickets, giving the Fell a comfortable win.

Mention must be made of the wicket-keeping of Tom Pinkney, who, standing up to all the bowlers had an outstanding game, including an important stumping of the dangerous Marsden player.
